I went with my son to the emergency room the evening of August 9th; he was on his bike and me on my wheelchair.

The time was 5:40 p.m. when we arrived and they put us in their waiting room. While in the room, I took a look at his hand and since he was able to move all of his digits, albeit their range of motion was compromised due to the pain, so I was hoping he had sprained his hand in a bad way. There were three other people in the waiting room when we first arrived and as we were sitting those people dwindled until there was just my son and myself in the room.

We waited for ninety minutes before a nurse took us to an exam room. Once again, we had to wait but at least we were getting closer to seeing the doctor. When she did arrive, she performed her initial assessment and ordered an x-ray.

After the X-ray, the doctor returned with the diagnosis that my son had a hairline fracture. She splinted his hand and informed us that we would need to follow up with his family physician. With diagnosis in hand, we made the trek from the emergency room to his home. Since I live five blocks away, it took five minutes in my wheelchair and I was in my apartment getting ready for bed.
