You should keep your wording simple and easy to understand. This will make your writing appeal to more people and will help you to get your point across much more easily.

I have read books where a dictionary needed to remain close. I can tell you I could not get into the story. Having a decent vocabulary so the same words aren't overused is good, but attention needs to be paid to word choice. If the word isn't understood by the reader, then you just kicked that person out of your story which means the individual might not become a follower of future novels.

I keep a thesaurus handy so words aren't overused. If a word needs investigated for meaning then I reevaluate whether that word is a decent choice for the sentence. My main concern is that the sentence is understood. An editor, if they are worth anything, will pickup on word choices and provide alternate recommendations.

Now I say that but I haven't had the need for an editor since I'm still building my story. This tip is from information I read and I plan to put this information into practice with my current WIP.
